I actually solved it, by raising the contrast in the mask, and then lowering the opacity of the layer to soften the drop shadows back to normal. But i'm also impressed with your answer, so i'm giving you the star, and studying your method.

These are my layers. Can you elaborate on what to cut and how to "add new shadows back in"? The shadow is the "shadow color" is what makes my life difficult, since it is covering all the background instead of just the book. If i delete this, the background of course goes back to its original state, (which i want) but the shadows cast by the book disappear completely (which i don't want.) (as shown in last picture.)

Hello, So i want to use these two mockups in a presentation. The issue is, i want the background to be one seamless color for the sake of consistency. (Or at least where the two images meet, because i don't want to lose the shadows) I understand that there's a layer mask for shadowing in both images on top of a solid color (in this case white) . Can i limit / crop the layer mask around the object, leaving the rest of it as a solid color? Is there an entirely different way of solving this? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, good to know others have this issue too. At this exact example, that line stayed even after i expanded. Other cases are less destructive, like filling a corner of a shape after using shape builder.

I'm confident it is not a Brush option. It is NOT consistent, the brush simply shouldn't appear like that. Also, like i mentioned above, the same exact issue occurs on other occasions, like when merging shapes with shape builder. It appears like a small "filled" shape on corners that has no reason to exist there.

Hello, I came across this weird bug. Illustrator keeps adding "invisible" fillings to paths. This is the outline view, and the original lines : And this is the GPU view. If i expand it, the "invisible" filling becomes an actual (false) path, so the issue isn't limited on the preview. Any ideas?

I was under the impression that it wasn't possible. Then i turned on "Preview Pane" on my PC at work, (W10 version 1803) and to my surprise, it was also showing previews for all illustrator CC files. Sadly, that's not the case on my home Windows 10 PC. It previews PDFs, but not CC files. Both PCs run the same windows 10 version. My home PC runs a slightly newer version of CC, and that's the only relevant difference i can think of. Any ideas?

No, my project requires me to align text lines with specific objects, so working with paragraphs is not an option. I already had to install a custom script to allow me to break individual lines of text.

Thank you, the combination of "outline object" and "use preview bounds" worked for both problems. Should i assume that this is the only way of properly working with text in illustrator? (I'd rather not work in indesign if the project has less than 2 pages) Any idea on why the text bounding box is that way by default?

Let's say i want to distribute multiple INDIVIDUAL lines of text vertically without converting them into curves. (create outlines) I'm having 2 problems : 1. When i try to distribute the space between them vertically, (by selecting them all, and clicking on the Vertical distribute Space button) the result is incorrect. 2. When i try to align the text with another object horizontally, the object gets aligned with the point type bounding box, rather than the text itself. Is there a reason for the bounding box to be this way, instead of accurately surrounding the text? This wouldn't be a problem if i turn the text into curves, but i absolutely need to keep the text as text here, for future editing.

I see. So there is no proper way to change individual numbering styles? My solution so far was to just create a small text box just for the first footnote. Your's seems easier. I'll wait a while in case there is a more "legitimate" way to do this, and if not, i'll mark your answer as correct. Thank you for replying.

Hello, I need my first footnote on the first page of each section to be an asterisk rather than "1". After the first one, the footnotes need to continue normally (1,2,3...) Is this possible?

Using Word and then pasting actually solved my problem. Both italics and superscript maintained in all languages.

I don't currently have the option to open the file in word, i'll try it in the future though. Let's say that i go with the copy / paste option, that maintains all the italics. Is there a reasonably easy way to select all the wrongly transferred superscript (baseline shift value .05) and correct them?

Hello, I'm placing a .docx file, into indesign. The original text has both English and Greek characters. Using the place option, the English characters maintain their italics format, but the Greek characters do not. If i try to actually copy and paste the text, both English and Greek characters maintain italics, as i setup the clipboard handling appropriately. Although copy / pasting introduces other problems such as weird gaps between paragraphs and superscripts that get transferred simply as normal text with a baseline shift value of .5 Is there a way to solve either of the import option's problems?
